AWS’ Solids Recovery Module (SRM) is a proven, reliable, automated, safe, quiet, skid-mounted module that requires no day-to-day maintenance.  It is self-cleaning and is designed to automatically run 24/7. It currently operates in a number of other industry applications around the world..

The Solids Recovery Module is unique in that 1) it removes 98% of solids down to five microns in size (90% is considered excellent); 2) it has patented features that allow it to withstand the very caustic nature of animal wastes, creating i) very high uptime/low downtime, ii) lower maintenance costs, and iii) greater overall productivity; and 3) it substantially removes the specific nutrients that cause the most problems in land irrigation/application and water pollution.

The SRM removes 98% of the suspended solids from the waste stream, thus removing 90% of phosphorous from the water and producing a dry, non-leaching solid that can be easily handled and transported.  The combination of low down time, high separation effectiveness and the dryness of solids output allow AWS to use the SRM as a primary component of its unique, patent-pending process.

The AWS SRM 50 provides solids-liquid separation for flushed wastes (8% solids or lower) for ~ 700 cows or 3000 hogs (larger configurations are available; see "Specs" below)

Characteristics:
Freshly-flushed wastes are intercepted on their way to the lagoon and separated, real time, by the AWS SRM. The resulting water, which is clear and mostly nutrient-free, can be either safely used for irrigation over equal or less land and/or used as clean flush water. With further treatment using existing technologies, this water can be brought to reclaim or even drinking water quality.

  • Triple-angle scroll, double-angle bowl (patented) produce higher compressions, lower torque
  • Polyurethane scroll (patented) does not wear and caustic feed material does not adhere to the scroll, which is also self cleaning
  • Independent hydraulic scroll drive minimizes vibration; no gear box is needed on the shaft, this enables higher speeds and low noise levels
  • Macerator pump/system grinds foreign objects to small sizes for processing
  • System automatically adjusts torque load/pressure for changes in feed consistency
  • Multiple, variable polymer injection points facilitate high removals
  • Automated or manual start-up, run, shut-down selections
  • Continuous cleaning while running; auto-cleans during shut-down cycle
  • User friendly Touch Screen monitoring
  • Internet monitoring available

AWS’ Gas Production Module (GPM) is a proven, reliable, automated, simple and safe, modular, low-maintenance solids treatment process that virtually eliminates solid animal wastes while destroying dangerous / hazardous effluents and emissions, while enabling production of valuable by-products.

The Gas Production Module is unique in that 1) it has the lowest exhaust measurements for NOX and SOX in the combustion industry (the proprietary burner technology is already recognized as best available control technology in three combustion applications by the most stringent Air Quality Management District in the U.S.); 2) it creates high volumes of “pipeline quality” gas in terms of btu content, with minimal amounts of CO2 and sulfur (thus lowering costs to remove these for pipeline use); and 3) it combusts 95% of the solids, leaving just 5% residual ash (readily marketable) versus 30-40% residual solids/sludge (requiring further treatment) from other gasification technologies and digesters.

Use of the gasifier to process animal waste in the AWS system is a new application of a proven technology that has been used in other waste processing applications since 1996.

The AWS GPM 1500 gasifies hog, dairy, beef, poultry and/or horse manure; it will process the wastes of ~ 700 cows or 3000 hogs (larger configurations are available; see “Specs” below)

Characteristics:
Wastes from existing flush farm systems are separated through the AWS SRM, or will be used as is from non-flushed operations, and become a feedstock for the

GPM (GPM 1500 defined below):

  • ~ 70% moisture in solids from AWS SRM (at 98% solids removal rate)
  • ~ 1500 pounds/hour of 70% moist solids into the heated input hopper
  • ~ 3000 cu. ft./hour of ~1000 btu/cu. ft. (**) net gas produced by GPM, after fueling itself, or about 3.5 MM btu/hr in net energy available
  • This quantity and quality of gas will power a 300 kw/hr generator or micro turbine; cogeneration benefits are readily achievable
  • High-energy value methane gas is clean
  • Reduces the solids volume by > 95%
  • Ash production as a by-product is minimal (~ 60 pounds/hour) and salable
  • The ash produced is high-phosphorous, fertilizer-grade material that also can be used in concrete and is land fill friendly
(**) btu value of produced gas is dependant on btu value of the feedstock/manure

Specs and Emissions

The patented AWS GPM process utilizes indirect material heating, does not mix the flue and combustion gases, uses no air and gasifies the carbon (which creates more high-energy gas and low ash volume)

Guaranteed burner/flue stack emissions:
CO: < 100 PPM
NOx: < 30 PPM
SOx: 0
PM: 0 lbs/MMBTU/hr.
VOC: 0
Note: Actual emissions may be lower than some above values

Available sizes/electricity rating:
¾ tons per hour (nominally 300 Kw minimum)
3 tons per hour (nominally 1.5 MW minimum)

In summary, AWS provides a total solution to the pollution problems that adversely affect the industry while also providing highly attractive economics. AWS’ central plant approach puts the SRM on farms and the GPM offsite allowing de-centralized nutrient reduction and centralized energy production. The liquids remain on the farm for re-flush and/or irrigation/fertilization, and the solids are trucked to a centralized GPM for energy production. Complete on- farm systems are available under a modified central plant arrangement. The SRM can have stand alone applications for many farms (production of fertilizer, bedding, etc.).

Attributes of AWS’ Total Pollution Solution include:

  • Removal/reuse of 98% of total solids from flushed farm systems
  • Similar benefits derived from manure created in for non-flush systems
  • Ability to combine manure from multiple species to improve gas productivity
  • Nutrient reductions on farms are > 90% P, > 65% N, > 40% K
  • Creative arrangements bring abatement benefits to a wide range of farm sizes and needs
